Key Differences Between Cargo Modes

Each mode has different documentation rules — knowing the difference prevents holds and delays.

01
✈️
Air Courier — Fastest, Least Paperwork
For parcels up to 70 kg, express couriers (DHL, FedEx, ShipGlobal) handle the Shipping Bill and AWB on your behalf. You mainly need IEC, GST/LUT, and a valid commercial invoice. Couriers accept informal exports below ₹5 lakh under simplified EDI procedures.
02
🛫
Air Cargo — Heavier Shipments, Full Compliance
Air cargo (50 kg+) moves through airline cargo terminals and requires a full Shipping Bill on ICEGATE, a House AWB from your freight forwarder, and an AD Code linked to your bank. Dangerous goods need an IATA-DGR declaration. A CHA is typically required.
03
🚢
Sea Cargo — Most Documents, Lowest Rate
Sea freight (FCL/LCL) has the most complete documentation set. You need a Shipping Bill, Bill of Lading, Fumigation Certificate for wooden packing, and often a Container Stuffing Certificate and VGM Weight Certificate. Ideal for heavy, bulky goods.
