Understanding BRC & Bank Realisation
Key concepts every Indian exporter needs to know about foreign exchange realisation.
01
What is a BRC?
A Bank Realisation Certificate (BRC) is issued by your authorised dealer bank once your export proceeds are received and converted to INR. It is mandatory for FEMA compliance and required to claim export incentives like RoDTEP and IGST refund.
02
What Affects Your Rate?
Your actual INR realisation depends on the bank's buying rate (RBI reference ± margin), bank commission (typically 0.1–0.5%), SWIFT wire fees, and any other processing charges. The effective rate is always lower than the quoted exchange rate.
03
Minimise Deductions
Negotiate a lower bank commission for high-value exports, consolidate shipments to reduce per-transaction SWIFT fees, and use a bank with a tighter spread over the RBI reference rate. Even a 0.1% improvement on a large invoice adds up significantly.
